A Brief History Of The Father of Car Logos

Rusty Sain's Blog | A Brief History Of The Father of Car Logos

Everyday you hop into the driver seat of your Ford, which displays the company’s logo, to go to work, meet up with friends, or to drive home, but have you ever wondered about the story behind the creation of your vehicle’s logo?

You may not have been curious about the Ford logo before, but I bet you are now. Let’s take a closer look at how this popular logo came to life.

The Ford Motor Company was founded by Henry Ford and incorporated on June 16, 1903. The first sign of the Ford logo didn’t appear until 4 years later, in 1907, when the scripted typeface of Ford’s trademark was first introduced.

Many believe that the script used for the logo was that of Mr. Ford’s handwriting, but truth be told, it is not. The designer of the Ford logo, Childe Harold Willis, used the style of writing taught in schools when Ford and Willis were children to make the lettering inside the oval, which is highly recognizable today.

It may be surprising to learn that it wasn’t until 20 years after the introduction of the trademark, that the father of car logos, the Ford oval, was first featured on a Ford vehicle. The vehicle chosen to gracefully show-off the first logo was that of a 1927 Model A.

The simplicity of the Ford logo, with its blue oval and company name inside of it, can be seen on many vehicles driving on the roads today. It is no secret that it is one of the most famous car logos due to its popularity amongst many drivers.

Now that you have a brief history of the Ford logo, you can hop back into the driver seat of your Ford knowing a little more about the vehicle you love so much.
